To this day doctors do not know what exactly causes these types of eczema. Although one major factor may be due to a mal functioning immune system. Other major factors which are now being considered is the use of bathing products and woollen as well as synthetic clothing, excessive sweating has also being taken into account. Temperature and environmental allergens could also be causing outbreaks of eczema.

These types of eczema that most people tend to suffer from is atopic eczema. An outbreak causes the person severe discomfort in that their skin becomes raised and inflamed and they end up scratching due to itchiness and it is thought that maybe this is due to a breakdown of the immune system. This type occurs periodically on and off and will flare up should the person be in contact with allergen of some sort. There will always be a common factor and family history of allergies associated.

Another types of eczema which causes outbreaks on the hands especially the palm and the feet as well as along the sides of the toes which is characterized by clear, deep blisters that itch profusely as well as burn is known as Dyshidrotic eczema. The cause of this type of eczema is not known. This types of eczema is also known as vesicular palmoplantar dermatitis and around 20% of people have this condition.

This types of eczema is very common during the months of spring and summer and also common in tropical climates which may suggest that heat has something to do with the onset of this type of dermatitis.

Then there is the nummular eczema which presents with coin-shaped patches which is extremely irritating to the person and is commonly found on the lower legs, back, arms and buttocks. The area will either be crusted or flaking and is excessively itchy and is seen frequently in older men.

Usually there is a family history of atopic dermatitis as well as asthma and associated allergies which will ultimately increase the risks of developing nummular eczema and is seen as a chronic condition. And doctors have found nummular to be a very puzzling disease.

The causes of nummular eczema are unknown although there have been a number of factors which could be causing this condition like dry skin, low humidity, environmental and even some prescribed medications which are used for the treatment of acne could be the cause. There are substances that can worsen the condition like topical medications, detergents and soaps. Further literature is available online.

Atopic eczema appears early in life, usually in babies between 2 months and 18 months old. In babies, atopic eczema primarily affects the face, neck, ears and torso. It also appears on the tops of feet or the outside surface of elbows. Atopic eczema also is seen in older children, teen-agers and adults, where it usually involves the skin inside the creases of the inward bend of the elbow, knee, ankle, or wrist joints, the hands, or the upper eyelids.
