Never do Ab Workouts Again, In Your Life, Ever. 5 Alternatives!

February 27, 2010 by Helen Johnson

You don’t need ab workouts! Instead of doing real exercises to try and strengthen yourself the old-fashioned way, check out these 5, totally-viable, completely-not-ridiculous ways to replace them for good.

#5 Great Abs Are Out of Style.

Things have changed — now it’s all about beer bellies! No one really cares so much about great abs anymore. All the big trendsetters when it comes to what’s hot and what’s in are saying it loud and clear — flab is fab, lean is not.

#4 Most Extra Fat Finds its Way to Easily Concealable Areas.

Yeah, fine, we gain some fat — but who has ever heard of anyone’s body ‘placing’ that fat in an unfortunate place? I know we just chatted about those pot bellies above, but really, it’s not a big deal, because our bodies figure it all out and send the fat to places that never really see the light of day. So just eat away and don’t really worry, you’ll be fine!

#3 Beaches? What Beaches?

Think about it. We’ve got global warming, we’ve got pollution, it’s all pretty crazy, and who really wants to go to the beach anymore? No one really spends any time there — I haven’t heard of anyone going to the beach in years, and I’m practically an expert about these things.

#2 You Can Just Exercise At Your Desk!

You’ve seen those ads on TV, right? You just strap some electrodes to your stomach, turn on a noisy box with a bunch of wires poking out of it, and — if these ads haven’t lied to me — start losing all that stomach fat immediately! You don’t have to break a sweat or burn any calories, because a machine apparently does it for you! Goodbye all other types of workouts!

#1 Aren’t Diet Pills Just the Best?

Load yourself up with pills, you say? Hey, why not? Sure, they might just be sugar pills that will trick you into a placebo effect, or they could have serious negative side effects on your body. But how will you know if you don’t try, right? Why not be a guinea pig for a dubious industry? Forget those ab workouts!

Soy is a great source of energy and an awesome fat burner. You can add to other liquids or drink it flavored that you can buy at many stores. Snacking on edamame is also a good thing to do as these soybeans are a great natural snack and a good replacement to high fat foods.

Past and Current Concepts Of Beauty

January 27, 2010 by Patti Jovovich

Beauty has been desired by women throughout the ages. Beauty is the thing that attracts men. Beauty opens doors that are closed to the ‘ugly’. Eve of the Old Testament was the beautiful temptress. Delilah and Cleopatra each used their beauty to wield power over men.

Although, women have always wanted to be beautiful, ideas about good looks have changed over time. In Victorian England it was considered a thing of beauty to have milky white skin that would be considered too pale by today’s standards. Girls preserved their paleness by staying out of the sun and limiting the time they went outside. Only the working class who toiled in all weathers had ‘ruddy’ skin which today might be described as a tan.

It is no longer paleness that is considered beautiful. Rather, the opposite has become true with the suntan being a requisite for modern beauty. The sun tan lotion industry is booming as sun bathing is is now an important element of a woman’s beauty regime. If the sun fails then there is always the tanning salon where the same effect can be achieved.

As the European ideal of beauty spread to the New World, it spelled disaster to women of colour who were never able to match up to that ideal. After the abolishment of slavery, black ladies (and men) did everything they could to lighten their skins to look more acceptable and appealing. Is wasn’t until the 1970’s when the concept of ‘black beauty’ was born in the United States that African-American women began to feel more comfortable with their dark complexions.

Today things have changed drastically. Anyone regardless of race can be considered attractive. Indeed, some of the modern beauty icons are black women including Tyra Banks, Halle Berry and Michelle Obama. Beauty relies much more on a clear complexion and youthful skin. There are certain standards that must be reached to possess Hollywood style beauty. These include pefectly white teeth, perfect but understated makeup and a wardrobe to befit.

A female can have the most amazing looking face in the world but if she is heavy then she is not considered beautiful. Since the days of corseted dresses women have sought to be slim or appear smaller than they are in order to achieve optimum looks. Corsets were tied so tight that in some cased damaged the woman’s structure permanently. Today, weight loss pills and weight loss programs have taken over where the corset left off.

A multi-million dollar weight loss industry has been spurned by women’s desires to be smaller and more attractive. Also fashions have also evolved to reflect the smaller beauty ideal. In the 1960’s it was the mini skirt to show of toned legs and thighs. Today it is the belly top with a woman’s midriff exposed to show her flat and toned abdomen.

Age seems to have everything to do with the modern concept of beauty. In order to be gorgeous you must look younger. This is one of the hardest things to keep up with for the beauty conscious individual. There are literally thousands of anti-aging skin care products that claim to help women restore their lost beauty through rejuvenation of young looking skin. Most simply don’t work while others are marginally more effective. For ladies for whom being beautiful is everything, there is always the cosmetic surgery option.

5 Things You Should Know Before Enrolling In A Weight Loss Boot Camp

December 16, 2009 by Brandon Carrier

While just about all fitness boot camps include warm ups, workouts and an endless number of exercises, what you need may be more than that. Here’s how you can find the best boot camp to meet your specific needs. Keep in mind that your body is unique and has a specific way of responding to exercise, so you should gently experiment with it to understand its capacity, all while constantly making an effort to enhance it, and make it get as fit and healthy as you can.

Most fitness boot camps last anywhere from 30-60 minutes training 3-6 times per week. They include resistance training consisting of equipment as well as body weight. Some exercises might include push-ups, running, lunges, core exercises, squats and partner or team exercises. Each fitness boot camp begins with a warm up and ends with a cool down, which incorporates stretching exercises. Try to find exercise boot camps, which give you all this, and more. Choose a specialized boot camps such as weight loss boot camps or sports specific boot camps, in order to meet your specific goal. Consider the 5 tips below carefully before zeroing in on a particular boot camp.

TIP 1. You must find out how closely the boot camp suits you. Since workouts are done in groups find a bootcamp that puts a limit on the number of participants. No matter how good an instructor might be, stay away from boot camps that exceed a 15 to 1 ratio (participant to instructor). This ensures that you will be able to get enough of focused, individualized attention and the instructor can be sure everyone is on task and make necessary adjustments.

TIP 2. You must find out how encouraging or how intimidating you want your instructor to be, according to your goals and your personal flexibility. Some boot camps have instructors who have military backgrounds and take somewhat of a “hardcore” approach. The newest trend of boot camps has little or no military regimen but takes more of an energetic and fun personal training approach. Both however are a sure fire way to get results.

TIP 3. A qualified fitness instructor or personal trainer with recognized certificates and or a relevant college degree should be leading any reputable bootcamp. A medical clearance and private fitness assessment should be mandatory before beginning. This will give you the chance to ask the trainer any questions or concerns you may have.

TIP 4. A good boot camp instructor should answer all your questions and never ask you to ignore injuries or bodily pains. Just be sure you do your homework and not follow the instructor blindly. Traditional, military style boot camps mean tough workouts and subjecting the body to the worst of conditions. Most people are looking for something way milder than that and therefore never encouraging you to pull your body beyond its limit.

TIP 5. Any highly regarded fitness camp ought to offer some kind of trial period. During this time make sure to talk to others and find out as much as you can from the instructor and existing members and feel free to discuss their results. If this is not something you are comfortable with, than simply pay attention and take note during the session and you will get a feel for the environment and quickly decide if the particular boot camp is one you would like to continue.

Knee Replacement Surgery: The Minimally Invasive Option

November 3, 2009 by Dr. Stefan Tarlow

For a procedure that provides reduced trauma and pain, shorter hospital stay, and brief rehabilitation, minimally invasive knee surgery is the latest and best option. This method, while quite challenging as a surgical procedure, is a tremendous advance in the field of orthopedic surgery.

Because smaller incisions are used than in traditional knee replacement surgery, the joint is exposed far less. This translates into less pain and trauma. A patient who has a successful minimally invasive knee surgery procedure can expect to be hospitalized a very short time and have a quick and easy recovery period.

This surgery is recommended for the patient who is of an average weight and activity level. The patient should have fairly good ROM (range of motion) and be relatively free of knee deformity. A patient who meets all of these criteria and has a successful procedure will be hospitalized for 3 days or less and will have little or no inpatient rehabilitation process.

One thing you should keep in mind is that these findings are somewhat disputed. Most studies find the above statements to be true. There are, however, some studies that show that the pain experienced, length of hospital stay, and intensity of rehabilitation are the same as that one would experience with traditional total knee replacement surgery.

Another thing to consider is the fact that the risks of this surgery have not been formally studied or documented; however, they are surely quite similar to those of any other knee replacement surgery. For the most recent information on this, consult your orthopedic surgeon.

Your Hospital Stay

You will stay at the hospital for a short time after your surgery. During this time, you will be given medications to handle any pain you may be experiencing.

You should talk with your orthopedic surgeon about pain medications before your surgery. In this way, you will not experience any surprises in this important area of your recovery. Also, discuss movement and exercise. Be prepared to begin your rehabilitation almost immediately after surgery.

Another thing you will want to be aware of is the fact that lung congestion is a risk after any surgery. Be sure to cough frequently and breathe deeply to avoid this problem.

Blood clotting sometimes causes problems after knee surgery. To keep the veins in your legs free of clots, your orthopedic surgeon may prescribe blood thinning medications, compressive stockings, compression boots, and/or elevation.

A machine called CPM or continuous passive motion exercise machine may be used. This machine helps reduce the possibility of blood clots and improve flexibility of the knee by keeping it in continuous, gentle motion while keeping it elevated.

Speeding Up Your Recovery After Knee Arthroscopy

September 12, 2009 by Dr. Richard Edelson
Filed under Health Insurance

Recovery from knee arthroscopy is fairly quick, especially when compared with recovery from open knee surgery. Still, it is important to follow all of your orthopedic surgeons instructions for the fastest recovery possible.

Managing Swelling

Your orthopedic surgeon is sure to instruct you to keep your leg elevated during the first few days after surgery. Additionally, you can use ice to keep pain and swelling under control.

How to Manage Your Bandage

You will leave the hospital with a bandaged knee. It is important to keep that bandage on for the first day. After you take it off, it is OK to take a shower, but be sure not to spray water right on your knee. Keep your knee clean and dry until the incisions are healed. Definitely avoid soaking in the bath.

You will go to the orthopedic surgeons office a few days after your surgery for a follow-up. The orthopedic surgeon will tell you about the surgical findings and inform you about your plan of treatment for recovery.

What About Weight Bearing?

Click here for more on rehabilitation after surgery .

Your orthopedic surgeon may recommend that you use an assistive device like crutches, a walker, or a cane after your surgery, but this is unlikely. Usually, you can walk without assistance following arthroscopy. You may have a little trouble bearing weight on the leg at first, but this will resolve as time passes and your leg becomes stronger and stronger. You should avoid driving for about a week. Be sure to double-check with your orthopedic surgeon before you begin driving again.

Following Your Exercise Plan Closely Will Help

Your orthopedic surgeon will prescribe some exercises for you to do after your surgery. He or she may even refer you to a physical therapist for specialized work. Whatever the instructions are, be sure to follow them exactly to facilitate quick and thorough recovery.

Antibiotics and Pain Medications

It is typical to return home with a prescription for preventative antibiotics and another for pain medications. Be sure to follow instructions carefully to prevent infection and keep your pain and discomfort at a minimum.

Complications Are Rare

Arthroscopic knee surgery rarely generates complications. If any occur, they are usually mild and easily managed. They include, an accumulation of blood around the knee, possible blood clots, and possible infection.

Indications of Complication

Contact your orthopedic surgeon ASAP if you experience:

1) A high, persistent fever

2) Chills

3) Redness or a hot feeling around the knee

4) Increasing or persistent pain

5) Swelling in the knee that seems exaggerated

6) Calf muscle pain that increases

Fighting the Obesity Epidemic One Person at a Time

August 25, 2009 by Anna Holdaway

There is no question that we are living in a time of depressed people. Most Americans are not doing any type of physical labor. In our school systems they are taking away some of the most vital programs that are combating obesity. They are taking away physical education and recess in many parts of the country. Why is this happening? Why would congress allow such things? Our taxpayers are paying boat loads of money trying to fight this obesity epidemic when we can have complete control over it.

It seems that Americans are getting fatter by the minute. There is so much more access to calorie rich foods and sugars that are causing this problem. Many Americans know they overeat, yet they are not willing to do what it takes to take care of their problem. They are the problem and most of us know better. Most people know what they need to do to overcome their addictions to food but they are not willing to give it up.

Many people know what they must do to maintain their health. Most people are not inclined to workout everyday until something catastrophic happens to their health. Some people, even after repeated conversations about medical conditions from their doctors, ignore the advice of medical professionals and they slip back into their daily habits or inactivity and overeating.

What can we do to stop this obesity epidemic? Individually and collectively we can start making a difference. However, it does start with you. Are you the root of the problem? Do you overeat? How many times do you exercise on any given week? If you are part of the problem I would suggest you make some drastic changes to your behaviors that are keeping you overweight. You can do it. Do it for yourself, not just because of the epidemic.

My recommendation to everyone right now is to win the fight of obesity. Overcome the addictions that are holding so many Americans bound from enjoying a life of true freedom; a life full of happiness and confidence. I am convinced that many of Americans problems would be solved if we took care of our physical selves and treated our bodies like temples.

Why Do Women Want Two-Piece Tankinis?

August 14, 2009 by Alexis Miller

What is a woman looking for when she’s shopping for swimwear? I would have to go with “great fit.” That, in my mind, is the number one concern, follow closely by how the suit looks. So, seeing how fit and style are the most important factors, why would swimsuit companies produce suits that you have to buy the tops and bottoms separately?

I shouldn’t have to address that here. If you are a woman that has been through the process of purchasing and fitting a swimsuit, you’ll know innately. The buying and fitting process is exasperating.

The tankini has become super popular across the world for a number of reasons. They seem to fit any size woman, including pregnant women. They are extremely versatile and can work for any type of woman. It’s hard to find a great fitting one-piece and worse to find a bikini that you feel sexy in.

With tankinis, you can have one suit that will work for both private and public situations. You can have a more modest top and a sexy bottom with a skirt, or a more skimpy top and bottom for the beach. Just trow on a skirt and you’re off to the club.

Wear the full top with your skimpy bikini bottoms at home; choose a nice length skirt for over top those same bottoms for public beach time. Even switch it up to pair a skimpy top with skirt over bottoms for a nice change.

People are turning to tankinis because they offer swimsuit solutions that were previously unavailable in any type of suit. I personally love tankinis.

The average woman is faced with choices offered by department store cookie cutter swimwear. Online finding websites with gorgeous swimsuits has never been easier. The best part of buying Tankinis is that you can do it online and still get a good fit. Therefore, your choices are massive.

Never having to go to the department store to face one of those fun house mirrors in the dressing room does have its appeal to be sure. This alone is the best reason to shop online. Privacy is another. Frankly, this is an awesome idea for a gift certificate for a friend or a wife.

Personal Trainer from Langhorne Explains How Lower Ab Exercises Can Be Misleading

June 5, 2009 by Jose Loni

Is it possible to get six pack abs by doing lower ab exercises? The answer is no. Doing lower ab exercises will not get you six pack abs. To get well-defined abs, we need to focus on increasing our metabolism through our diet and increasing our exercise program.

Localized lower ab exercises will just not do it. Doing them can help our abdominal, hip and back muscles get stronger to support our body’s movements, but they will not help give us six pack abs.

Spot reducing does not work. Directly exercising on the problem area of the lower abs is not effective in burning fat at that spot. We need to do overall body exercises to affect our whole body to get rid of the excess stomach fat.

To get well-defined abs, we need to increase our metabolism. Through our diet, we need to make sure we eat quality foods that our body can easily burn. When our body is able to burn the food we eat, it will then burn the excess fat that we have for further energy production.

Lowering caloric intake by eating small meals 5-6 times throughout the day helps keep our energy up and our blood sugar stable. Energy is used to digest food so the frequent meals help burn even more calories.

Engaging in overall physical activity is a great metabolism booster. Our muscles are positively affected by resistance training, in particular, causing them to work harder and consume more energy. As a result, our body gets more efficient at locating and using up excess fat as fuel.

Interval training trains our body in an anaerobic manner, which makes the body build muscles that will be reactive and explosive. These types of muscles have a high metabolic rate and consume more energy. The increased metabolic activity of the muscles increases the body’s fat burning capacity and allows it to burn excess fat even several hours after the exercise session.

Doing lower ab exercises in isolation is simply not the answer to getting toned and visible abs. However, having a smart eating plan and regular physical activity can boost metabolism and send us on our way to achieving six pack abs.
