Dry Hair: How to care for and treat Dry Hair

May 20, 2009 by Jennifer Summers

You need to select the right hair shampoo and conditioner for your hair type to get the best possible results from your hair care routine. We are aware of hair that is in good condition. It shines, it is simple to care for – it just looks good. The appearance of your hair is one of the features over which you can have complete power over. You can alter the shape, colour, length and style of your hair according to the age you wish to come across. The style, length and condition of hair all contribute to how we notice the people we come across.

Dry hair is hair that does not contain enough moisture. This is usually because the cuticle has become heavily weathered and porous, so that the cortex cannot retain water. It shows up more in long hair than in short, simply because the hair has been growing for longer and therefore has weathered more. It is more common in women than in men, because women are more likely to wear their hair long. The dryness may come to affect more of the hair if it is given repeated chemical treatments, particularly perming, and especially perming associated with bleaching/colouring.Your hair is dry if: * it looks dull * it feels dry or rough * it tangles easily * it is difficult to comb or brush * it has been treated chemically (permed, bleached or colored) * it is liable to split ends * it is dry and frizzy. If your hair matches any of these criteria, you should choose a shampoo and conditioner that are designed for dry hair.

Combat the damage of chemical treatments, colouring, heat-styling and environmental pollution by deep-conditioning your hair on a regular basis. This will help replenish lost moisture and keep locks shiny and resilient. Clean your hair frequently, using good-quality products. Product: Moisturizing Shampoos and Conditioners – Good for very dry hair. Restores moisture lost in blow-drying.

And essentially – do not forget to condition it well. Leave-in Conditioners and Re-constructive detanglers are the correct products to use. A light leave-in conditioner is great for creating shine and body to straight hair and for taming. Have the ends cut regularly by a skilled stylist, so as to prevent weathering effects such as split ends.

Very little water can enter into or out of the cortex in a regular, undamaged hair shaft. This is because the cuticle enveloping the cortex is in one piece. But if your hair has been processed too frequently the cuticle scales might not return to their usual tightness and its defence is lost. Over-porous hair is dry, and you are likely to develop split ends. The damaged cuticle is brittle and deteriorates as time goes on. After washing your hair be gentle with the brushing, drying and combing.

The bottle should read: Moisturizing or Replenishing. These types of shampoos are heavier on moisturizing, and can leave a very fine film of conditioner on your hair to help keep it smooth and silky. They are formulated to be easy-going on dry, damaged hair. Working best on: Dry, frizzy, damaged hair.

The 10-Minute Exercise Routine

To get the most from your workout, health professionals advise working out for half an hour to an hour every day. But what if your work schedule or other factors don’t leave you that much time to devote to exercise?

Identify New Opportunities

Exercising is always possible provided you just squeeze it into your schedules in a more resourceful manner. Get off your couch and start moving around, advises fitness guru Ann Grandjean. Every bit of chore inside your house is an opportunity to get fit. The trick is to get yourself moving – clear out the attic, do some gardening, walk to the grocery store. Any activity that expends energy also burns up calories.

Every stolen moment counts

A couple of 10-minute windows in your day may not seem like enough time to get a good workout, but a recently conducted study suggests differently. It determined that men and women who took 10-minute walks or engaged in other exercise for a similar amount of time had a higher probability of exercising regularly. Also, they lost more weight on the whole than participants who worked out in 1-hour intervals.

What other experts say

In Virginia, exercise physiologist Glenn Gaesser recently conducted a study in which subjects exercised for 10 minutes at a time. He determined that 15 sets of 10-minute workouts caused those who did them to essentially turn back time. Participants who followed this regimen were rewarded after one month when Gaesser found that their levels of fitness matched those of men and women 20 years their junior.

Split up your normal hour-long routine into more manageable periods in order to feel more confident and motivated, advises time management consultant Harold Taylor. It’s easy to give up if you never have time to make it to the gym, but a quick workout, however small, will keep your doubts in check and your motivation strong.

An Addition, Not An Alternative

Small workout sessions are great solutions for busy workdays and lagging enthusiasm, but they shouldn’t replace your regular routine. If you are continuously time-challenged and don’t anticipate being able to frequent the gym anytime in the near future, there are other ways to work a real exercise program into your day. You don’t have to do them all, just pick the best ones for your situation and stick to it.

* When you pick up the morning paper, take a quick 5-minute walk up the street and back again.

* If you’re stuck at home to care for a sick child, work on the exercise bike or Stairwalker while your “patient” is asleep.

* Jump rope or do jumping jacks. This burns as much as 90 calories in 10 minutes.

* Do a few sets of upright push-ups while standing at the kitchen counter. This works your arms and shoulders.

* Shoot hoops with your kids or play baseball in the backyard.

* Take a hint from exercise instructor Sheila Cluff, who stores dumbbells in her bathroom so she can do a few sets before bedtime. Cluff is a professional fitness expert at The Palms in Palm Springs, CA.

* Join your kid at baseball or football practice and walk laps around the field.

About The New Engine 2 Diet

April 17, 2009 by Joshua Anderson

According to Texas firefighter Rip Esselstyn, the author of Engine 2 Diet, you can lose weight, reduce cholesterol, and look fabulous by being on the Engine 2 diet for 28 days. What Engine 2 Diet does is that it plans your meals and shopping lists so that you can dish up easy-to-make meals. You will have to shop for the food items at a store that retails only natural foods. Your food intake is then logged and along with the planned exercise regime, you find yourself on the way to a new you. Importantly, you connect with all the others who are on this diet so that you get the support you need.

Under the Engine 2 diet, low fat protein foods like fruits and vegetables, nuts, seeds and whole grains are the main ingredients for food. Such a kind of a diet is not followed by so many of us and so it is not very easy to switch immediately to this kind of a diet plan. During the transition period that is when you switch on to this plan one can include fish and chicken in the diet. Even soy yoghurt, tofu and vegetable burgers are allowed to be consumed. So are whole grain pastas and whole grain crackers, which are allowed so that the Engine 2 diet plan does not get too boring. You will be surprised to note that in this plan with every 1000 calories you consume you will be consuming just 2.5 grams fat contents. Usage of oil while cooking these foods is a strict no and sugar should be used just as a natural sweetener only.

The quantity of salt consumed in the Engine 2 diet foods is very less. Much of the proteins required are taken from the plants in the Engine 2 diet. Actually most people are of the understanding that proteins are obtained only in foods such as eggs, meat and various other dairy products. But the Engine 2 diet plan proves that the proteins obtained from the plants are equally beneficial to the body and are easy to digest. Proteins contain around twenty amino acids out of which only eight of these amino acids can be absorbed by our body system. So not only the non vegetarian foods but even plants can give us the required amino acids. The Engine 2 diet has proved it effectively in its diet plan. Our body can absorb on a daily basis at least 70 percent calories from the carbohydrates, which provide enough fuel to our bodies.

The Engine 2 diet lays a lot of emphasis on proteins obtained from the plants. Different quantities of amino acids are available in different plants. The Engine 2 diet selects different vegetable combinations which complement each other so that the right quantity of proteins and amino acids are available to the body. Proteins available from the plants are much safer than proteins obtained from non vegetarian foods. Our whole body requires energy at all times, be it working, exercising, breathing or for that matter even digesting food, all require energy which can be obtained from carbohydrates. After the digestion process sugars available in both the complex as well as simple carbohydrates get converted into glucose.

Carbohydrate remains in the blood as glucose, but in the muscles and liver, the carbohydrate is stored as glycogen. The body knows what it needs. Therefore, any excess carbohydrate is stored as fat. It is the complex carbohydrates that are health-friendly. These are found in vegetables, beans, sweet potatoes, fruits and different whole grain cereal breads. These complex carbohydrates release sugar in a controlled manner into your body’s system, thereby allowing the body to make full use of it as a fuel, and you feel energetic throughout the day. Research has proved beyond doubt that plants can give you all the fat you need.

Most foods give us simple carbohydrates which may give you instant energy and give you a very high feeling but then they get stored in the form of fat in your body. So the simple carbohydrates that are stored in our body and that make us fat are actually very dangerous for the well being of our body. Good fats that are either poly saturated or mono saturated fats are found in different kinds of plants. Different fruits and vegetables contain various fat contents, for example bell peppers contain 6%, spinach 11%, strawberries 5%, broccoli 8% and the super food soybeans contain 41% fat content. Fats obtained from plants are a good source of fats.

From various case studies of famous champions and athletes we are able to find that so many of them were on plant diets alone. The hugely competitive Martina Navratilova was on a constant plant based diet during her career. Esselstyn, the author of Engine 2 Diet book has stated various examples in his book. For example Tony Gonzalez won more than a thousand triathlons, by beating breast cancer. Salim Stoudamire, NBA player and Dave Scott have won the very famous Iron man triathlon which was held in Hawaii. So from these studies we can understand that we need not resort to eating only non vegetarian foods to obtain the best nutrients. Plants can also provide the same good nutrients which are released slowly in to our body system. Vegetarian food like the fortified soy milk can give our body a rich supply of essential supplements like Vitamin B12.

To enjoy good health, it is better if one can substitute fish oil with soybeans, flaxseed and walnuts and other leafy vegetables. Rich omega 3 supplements can be obtained from these and also from plankton. Plants contain high fiber content and are packed with nutrients. You may enjoy tasty food containing margarine, sour cream and butter which are all sources of high fat content, but then you will not be able to enjoy good health.

We all develop certain tastes, right from our childhood. So when we try out the natural plant food, in the beginning, we find the taste a bit different, but as the time goes by one can get used to it and it becomes a kind of a habit. Once you find that you are fitter than before you realize the actual benefits of plant food in comparison to non vegetarian foods.

A Guide To Choosing Skincare Products

March 31, 2009 by Marianne E. Arnesson

Are you struggling to find the most effective skincare products? Are your current products working for you? Or are you finding yourself frustrated again and again by not getting the results you desire?

You can believe me when I say that I have been through the same hassles myself in an effort to find effective products.

As consumers we are faced with a massive array of choices and it can be challenging to make the correct decision when faced by all these options.

The tips below might make your choice a little easier to make.

1: Sunblock The first and most effective skincare product hands down is using the proper SPF, of at least 30. Look also for a medical grade sunblock, as they have the highest zinc oxide content, around 9%.

Zinc oxide present in a sun cream at this level acts as a sun block rather than a sunscreen. This is far more effective than normal sun screens.

If sun damage has already occured it is absolutely vital that a sun block be applied to the skin.

Tip 2:Skincare products containing vitamin c are a great friend in dealing with the harmful effects of free radicals.

Collagen is the main reason for plump skin and its production is greatly helped by vitamin c. Look for products that contain the following ingredient, L-ascorbic acid.

This powerful antioxidant will visibly reduce signs of aging by toning and firming saggy skin.

Tip 3: Another very useful ingredient is Hyaluronic Acid. This works by binding moisture to the skin, thereby increasing the moisture retention ability of the skin. This really helps with combating fine lines and wrinkles. Because it is easily absorbed by the skin it also proves to be very good at carrying other anti aging treatments to other skin parts.

Tip 4:Glycolic Acid has been shown to be highly effective at clearing dead skin cells and reducing brown pigmentation.

For those who suffer from an uneven skin tone, this is a key choice to sloughing those dead cells to bring out the smooth and healthy complexion underneath.

A tip if you are about to have laser facial hair removal is to clean your skin with a glycolic acid product. This has the effect of extending the hair to its fullest thus leaving you with a little bit more hair free time.

Tip 5: Vitamin K Lastly, for your skincare products regimen look for those choices rich in Vitamin K, as it is proved to heal bruising and the purplish color that causes under eye circles.

Its impact generally is to reduce the appearance of fine lines and puffiness.

Those are the 5 tips to finding the most effective skincare products out there. Be sure to read the labels carefully to find the most accurate ingredients to work for you.

A little time spent on research and then acting on that research will prove beneficial. It will be time well spent in the search for the best products.
